Canal de sortida de l’aire

Oral

En el mode d’articulació oral el vel del paladar (paladar tou) s’eleva i, en contacte amb la paret posterior de la faringe, tanca el pas de l’aire a la cavitat nasal.

En l’articulació de les consonants oclusives es poden distingir dues fases:

• Oclusió (en anglès, closure): tancament complet dels articuladors que té com a conseqüència un augment de la pressió de l’aire en el tracte vocal. La localització de l’oclusió determina la zona d’articulació de la consonant.
• Explosió (en anglès, release): sortida ràpida de l’aire acumulat en el tracte vocal.

Les consonants aspirades

Fricatiu

En el mode d’articulació fricatiu es dona una constricció entre els dos articuladors que produeix una turbulència (fricció) com a resultat del pas de l’aire per un canal estret.

La localització de la constricció en el tracte vocal determina la zona d’articulació de les consonants fricatives.

La sonoritat de les consonants fricatives és causada per la vibració dels plecs vocals durant la constricció entre els articuladors.

Alguns autors distingeixen entre fricatives sibilants i no sibilants:

• Fricatives sibilants: presenten una concentració d’energia a les altes freqüències com a resultat d’una fricció intensa, una posició còncava de la llengua, que forma un solc, i una sortida de l’aire obstaculitzada per les dents; aquestes característiques donen lloc a un so agut i xiulant com el de les alveolars [s] i [z] o el de les postalveolars [ʃ] i [ʒ].
• Fricatives no sibilants: produïdes amb una fricció menys intensa i de freqüència més baixa que les sibilants, com és el cas de les labiodentals [f] i [v] o de les dentals [θ] i [ð].

Contacte entre els articuladors

El terme ‘ròtic’ prové del nom de la lletra grega rho (ρ).

Terminologia utilitzada en la descripció de les consonants ròtiques:

«Així, als fonetistes castellans els fóra molt saludable d’aprendre el sentit del mot “vibració”, cosa que els estalviaria de dir que els fonemes intervocàlics de carro i caro són tots dos vibrants, amb la diferència que el primer té diverses vibracions i el segon només una. Un moviment vibratori és un moviment periòdic, i amb un sol element no hi ha manera d’establir cap mena de periodicitat, o sigui que parlar d’una sola vibració és com parlar d’un germà únic, i a una criatura de dotze anys aquesta beneiteria li costaria un zero ben rodó en un examen de física» (p. 29–30).

«tap /tæp/ n. 1. A segment in whose articulation the moving articulator is moved rapidly from its rest position so as to lightly strike a second, stationary articulator and is then returned to its starting position. The most familiar tap is the alveolar tap [ɾ], as in Spanish pero ‘but’ and in typical American pronunciation of Betty» (p. 350).

 

«flap /flæp/ n. 1. … A consonant whose articulation involves the articulator’s being withdrawn from its rest position and then moved rapidly back to its rest position in such a way that it strikes another articulator during its trajectory. The most familiar flap is the retroflex flap [ɽ] of many Indian languages» (p. 145).
