«Articulation rate describes the tempo of articulating an utterance, excluding any silent pauses, but including non-linguistic speech material such as filled pauses and prolongations of syllables. Articulation rate thus refers to the tempo of performance of all audible, ‘vocalized’ speech within an individual utterance, whether that speech consists of the manifestation of linguistic units or of paralinguistic signals of hesitation. Speaking rate refers to the overall tempo of performance not only of all the utterances in the particular speaking turn, including any filled pauses and prolongations of syllables within the utterances, but also the durations of any silent pauses between the utterances making up the speaking-turn» (p. 539).

Les variacions de la velocitat d’elocució

«In order to establish norms for speaking rate, one might conclude as a somewhat arbitrary rule of thumb that a speaking rate of more than 240 words per minute would count paralinguistically as a notably fast speaking rate, and fewer than 160 as a notably slow rate» (p. 542).

«Osser and Peng (1964) measured sounds per second for speakers of Japanese and of American English, and found no significant difference between them. den Os (1988) compared Dutch and Italian and found no significant difference in terms of syllables per second, though Italian was somewhat slower in terms of sounds per second. In a review of measurements of a number of different languages, Dankovicova (1994) quotes average figures from various studies: for German, 5.55 and 5.7 syllables per second, for French 5.29, 5.2 and 5.7 syl/sec, for Dutch 6.1, and for Italian 6.4. These are all for “normal” speaking rate – in different circumstances, of course, rates can vary. … Arnfield and Roach (1995) showed rates in English varying between 3.3 and 5.9 syls/sec. But overall, it seems that, on the evidence available at present, there is no real difference between different languages in terms of sounds per second in normal speaking styles» (p. 153).

«AR [Articulation rate] also varies as a function of the speaking style. It has been claimed that AR is faster in reading than in conversation (Grosjean & Deschamps, 1975; Lucci, 1983). However, some studies present an inverse tendency (Avanzi, Schwab, Dubosson, & Goldman, 2012; Crystal & House, 1990; Woehrling, Boula de Mareüil, & Adda-Decker, 2008)» (p. 96).

«most authors addressing the medium of radio recommend a speech rate of between 160 and 180 wpm. According to Hills (1987), the most recommended pace is 160 wpm; McLeish (2005 [1978]: 71) sets the rate at between 160 and 180 wpm; Utterback (2000: 141) determines that a rate of between 145 and 180 wpm is best: ‘Normally we read out loud at between 145 to 180 wpm. The most comfortable speed would be around 150 to 175 wpm.’ Boyd (2003) establishes the rate at between 140 and 220 wpm, although he considers 180 wpm to be the most natural and pleasing rate. … the work of Tauroza and Allison (1990) who analyzed the delivery rate of news items on BBC Radio and recorded a speed of between 150 and 170 wpm, moderately fast between 170 and 190 wpm, moderately slow between 130 and 150 wpm, faster than normal in 190 wpm, and on the contrary slower than normal in 130 wpm. These figures, in turn, reinforce the findings of Pimsleur et al. (1977) who recorded a delivery rate of between 160 and 190 wpm for English and French radio news broadcasters, moderately fast between 190 and 220 wpm and moderately slow between 130 and 160 wpm. In Spanish radio news, some research has shown that a high speech rate, of around 200 wpm, is used on all national radio stations (Rodero 2007)» (p. 393).
