"I used to claim I was in English, which was, of course, true in that I was employed in an English Department. But when I thought I was likely to be questioned about Beowulf or Byron, I claimed to be a psychologist -I had, after all, published papers in the Journal of Experimental Psychology and similar places-. Then when a real psychologist came along, I would claim to be in physics, having dabbled in acoustics. If I were punctured in taking that line, I would remember that I had also been punctured by EMG needles, and would have recourse to being a physiologist. At other times I have been an Africanist, trading on our having lived in Africa for a little over three years. More recently I have said that I am a computer scientist which is perhaps a little far fetched, but I spend a lot of my life programming, and have taught courses in things such as how to program in Modula-2." La interdiscipinariedad de las ciencias del habla
"The boundaries of phonetics as a subject have been set primarily by the object of its study, speech, rather than by considerations of methodology. Phonetics stands at the intersection of all disciplines concerned in any way with the study of speech"
